Lynn Ferguson is President of Deformation Control Technology, Inc., an engineering consulting firm established in 1982. He is a graduate of Drexel University, having received a BS in Metallurgical Engineering and MS and PhD in Materials Engineering. Prior to forming DCT, Dr. Ferguson was employed at TRW (1978-1982) and Republic Steel Corporation (1975-1978). His career has focused on the broad field of mechanical metallurgy, with emphasis on deformation processing effects on metals.
Over the past ten years, he has been extensively involved in simulation of mechanical and thermal processes using computer-based tools such as the finite element method. He and his colleagues at DCT routinely use DEFORM for simulation of deformation processes, and ABAQUS for thermal and stress analysis of products in service and in assessing heat treatment effects. His areas of expertise include:
- Analysis and development of forging, extrusion, drawing and rolling processes
- Heat treatment of ferrous and nonferrous metals, including phase transformation effects on distortion, residual stress and mechanical properties
- Hot and cold powder consolidation processes, such as die compaction, CIP/HIP and powder forging
- Performance prediction based on processing effects on microstructure
Dr. Ferguson has authored or co-authored over 60 papers and one book in these areas. |
