Edward N. C. Dalder, PhD

Dalder Materials Consulting, Inc.

Edward Dalder is president of Dalder Materials Consulting, Inc., an engineering consulting firm. Dr. Dalder has over 50 years industrial experience in fusion and resistance welding, brazing, and characterization of mechanical properties for both cryogenic and extreme high temperature applications. With Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for 29 years, he was responsible for programs involving materials development and mechanical property characterization for large cryogenic structures operating at 4 K. He managed a group involved in the development of advanced superconducting magnet-systems for fusion power. Dr. Dalder managed the design, construction, and operation of an automated aqueous corrosion test facility that supported the national nuclear waste disposal program.

Prior to joining LLNL, Dr. Dalder spent 5 years with the Applied Research Laboratory of the U.S. Steel Corp. developing fusion-welding and resistance-welding processes for high-strength steels used in the construction and automotive industries. Before that, he was employed by the Pratt and Whitney division of the United Aircraft Corporation, where he led a group developing pack-cementation and plasma-sprayed coatings for protection of turbine and compressor hardware. Dr. Dalder also was with two aircraft manufactures. With the Republic Aviation Corporation, he set up and operated a high-temperature mechanical properties facility. With the Grumman Aerospace Corporation, he set up and operated a mechanical testing and metallography facility that supported the activities of the company’s manufacturing engineering department.

Dr. Dalder has one U.S. patent and more than 40 technical and conference publications. He was a part-time lecturer at the University of California-Berkeley for 10 years. He also taught a summer class in cryogenic materials at MIT for several years.

Dr. Dalder holds B. S. and M.S. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York, and a Ph. D in Metallurgical Engineering from the Ohio State University. He is a co-holder of the J.F.Lincoln award for the beat welded structure of 1980.
